Even with crops as basic as wheat, different varieties (grown here for uses from bread-making to pasta or animal feed) have subtly different shapes, shades and height.
We always select the best characteristics for visual effect and monitorgrowth so we harvest when colour, shape, size and resilience are at their best.
Green wheat, barley and oats are cut in June - this is when they are in flower, before they start to lose colour and set seed. For the golden colouring, we wait until the heads have filled with grain but just before full maturity so the seeds are not shed in the drying process. Each of our products has a prime time for cutting.
Bunches are always cut as long as possible to fit in our box size.
It's vital that the drying process is started on the same day as harvesting. The bunches are hung on trolleys and wheeled into specialist kilns where we can control temperature and air flow.
Drying times are monitored for each flower type which must be fully dry before storage. Quality control is rigorous as bunches are packed into boxes and labelled.
Packing methods and quantities per box are specific for each variety and designed to minimise damage in handling or transit.
Boxes are kept in dehumidified stores until despatch.
Store dried flowers in fully dry conditions out of direct sunlight and make sure the area is mouse-free - especially if storing golden wheat or barley! Even ifbunches don’t contain edible seeds, they can be attractive nesting material!
Wrap bunches for retail display to prevent handling damage by customers.
Make sure the natural shape of each variety is preserved when wrapping.
Dried grasses are sturdy but flowers can be very delicate when dry. Handle as little as possible and, if seeming a bit fragile, condition in a damp atmosphere or with a fine mist spray to reduce shedding.

"Dried flowers inevitably fade over time so make sure the initial impact is as dramatic as possible by using blocks of colours which contrast with one another. Blues, reds and yellows can hold their colour well, but greens can look bleached-out quite quickly in direct sunlight so take this into account when arranging long-term displays.
Be aware of the humidity where dried flowers are displayed. Some will absorb moisture in damp atmospheres, causing droop over time."
