Introducing you to our

Lavender & Sleep Oils

DID YOU KNOW?

Castle Farm is the largest lavender grower in the UK and if you put all our rows end-to-end they would stretch for 120 miles – that’s all the way round the M25!

The fresh-cut lavender is distilled on-site to produce pure essential oils which are sold internationally for perfumery, aromatherapy, pharmaceutical and therapeutic use. We also hand-cut over 25,000bunches of lavender every year to sell fresh and dried.

PRODUCTION & PROVENANCE

Four different varieties are grown on Castle Farm. We have chosen each for its specific characteristics of oil quality, yield, colour and reliability.

Harvesting takes place in late July. When full of fresh lavender, the trailer is taken straight to the distillery where it is sealed tight and heated with high pressure steam. The plant cells expand and burst, releasing the oil into the vapour. When cooled, the steam condenses to water, the pure oil separates and we can syphon it off.

Years of experience of accurate timing and temperature control ensure a consistent high quality of all the oils which are sought after by perfumers, toiletries manufacturers and aromatherapists.

We also bottle the oils on site for direct sale or use the specialist skills of small artisan companies to create our own unique range of household and well-being products - such as the amazing Sleepy Scent!

The name 'Lavender' is derived from the latin ‘lavare’ – to wash – indicating a historic use for cleanliness and scenting the home.

Lavender vs Lavandin

– there’s an important difference!

Lavender

Lavandula angustifolia - a popular English garden plant.

Fragrance - intense, sweet, much prized in perfumery.

Calming, soothing character ideal for relaxation and sleep. Popular in bath and bedtime products.

Traditionally used for antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anaesthetic properties, to reduce itching and to help with travel sickness.

Culinary use – in baking, fruit preserves and ice cream. Especially good with citrus flavours.

Lavandin

Lavandula x intermedia – grown extensively in Provence.

Fragrance - sharp, penetrating, long-lasting, camphorus.

Refreshing, stimulating, invigorating character. Great for use as a pick me up throughout the day.

With it's higher camphor content it's useful as an insect repellent, in ‘lavender’ bags and as a household fragrance in candles and room sprays.

Culinary use – as a savoury herb in casseroles and roast dishes.
